A. ScreenPlay does two things, depending on how you look at it.
1. It captures your desktop activity as a motion video and saves to a file
2. It captures your desktop activity as a motion video and broadcasts it over an intranet or the Internet in real time (well, almost). Actually you can combine these two and archive streaming content simultaneously.

Q. Can ScreenPlay record audio?

A. Absolutely. ScreenPlay can record audio from your default sound hardware from any supported input device.

A. Absolutely. Usually this device is a microphone. You can also record from other lines such as CD-audio, Line-in etc. You can also record from the mixer - that is, capture the audio output; system sounds, music being played - just about anything.

Q. Why is the recommended system specification so high?

A. ScreenPlay is designed for producing commercial quality video screen captures. Screen resolutions are typically much higher than conventional video applications. While even DVD video is 720x480, even the lowest screen resolutions are about 800x600 these days - more likely 1024x768. Capturing, compressing, broadcasting, and archiving several frames of such resolutions taxes even the most modern machines. Besides, it is desirable to maximize the performance of the application being captured as well. Therefore, we recommend a rather high specification for serious applications. Q. What is the highest screen resolution supported?

A. Actually, you can capture at arbitrarily high resolutions. In practice, however, quality of capture is dependent on the raw power of your machines and steps you take to ensure the best possible result. On a decent modern machine, you can easily capture video of 1600x1200 without dropping frames.

Q. Why would anyone capture at low quality?

A. Because, low quality results in smaller file sizes and lower data rates for streaming. As mentioned in several places, quality actually refers to data rate of the video. If your capture area is small or has less details, it is possible to compress it well within the threshold data rate dictated by low quality setting. In this case, the resulting video is much smaller in size and can be streamed even over lower bandwidth networks.
Usually, it is best to experiment a bit with your capture scenario to optimize quality setting, before starting your "production" capture.

Q. Can I broadcast video over the internet?

A. Sure, go ahead. You will need to ensure that your machine is really on the Internet (with a valid internet IP) and accessible from outside. You should also typically try to minimize the data rate for smooth client side playback.

Q. The streaming URL does not work on the my host machine. Why?

A. So you want to capture, broadcast, and view on the same machine? This is often because of the way your machine is setup for a networked environment. Replacing the machine name in the URL by "localhost" should work as expected.

Q. When I stop recording, it takes a long time to actually stop. Is that a bug?

A. Not really. ScreenPlay keeps video data in memory for processing, to maximize performance. If your system has plenty of memory, ScreenPlay will make use of that to produce the best quality capture possible. Data in the buffer is fully compressed and written to the file when you hit "Stop Capture". You will notice that that for small windows and regions, ScreenPlay stops without noticeable delay.

Q. I find the "early finish" feature very useful. But why its state not saved?

A. "Early finish" or "short circuit" as we call it, is available on almost all stages of the wizard. When checked, the "Next" button changes to "Finish" and you can exit the wizard even though there are several more stages to go, if you were to configure it fully. While users found it extremely useful, saving it caused confusion, because an intuitive click on the "Next" button actually finished the wizard. Since this is a single click, we decided the best thing was not to save its state between sessions.
